The CUNY School of Professional Studies is building a team of developers and administrators to extend and support the Sahana Disaster Management System. The goal of this project is to expand on the existing functionality of this excellent application to meet the needs of an all-hazards response system for the NYC Office of Emergency Management. Additionally we are seeking to add value to the Sahana global user community, by stringently maintaining the quality and coding standards set forth by the Sahana Developer Community in the hope of having our work accepted by upstream for inclusion in successive Sahana releases.
We are currently seeking a highly motivated, talented linux sysadmin to support the development and production infrastructure of the New York City Sahana project as well as provide server and networking support for the ever-expanding infrastructure of the School of Professional Studies at large. This position is ideally suited to individuals who have a strong background in networking and who pick up new technologies quickly and without instruction or direction. Those who demonstrate insight, ingenuity, and a self-led passion for improving the world through technology will be among the most strongly considered candidates.

The School of Professional Studies
The School of Professional Studies serves New York City`s dynamic marketplace through the provision of timely, innovative and high-quality programs of study. Drawing on CUNY`s nationally and internationally renowned faculty and practitioners, SPS offers graduate and undergraduate certificates and degree programs in a wide range of fields. Specializing in online education, SPS is home to CUNY`s first online Master`s and online Baccalaureate degree programs.
SPS has partnered with the New York City Office of Emergency Management, New York`s premier agency for emergency education, preparation, coordination, and response, to advance and extend the development of the Sahana Disaster Management System. Sahana is a Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) first developed in response to the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami and has been successfully deployed around the world in furtherance of its mission to help alleviate human suffering and help save lives through the efficient use of IT during a disaster.
SPS is seeking a highly motivated self-starter to join our team in supporting our users and providing quality technology solutions for the school at large.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Linux Systems Administrator is responsible for maintaining and expanding the technical infrastructure of the CUNY School of Professional Studies as well as providing support for applications and users for the school and its partners. The incumbent is responsible to and receives general supervision from the Software Development Manager and will:
Design and implement clustering, failover, load-balancing, intrusion detection and load-testing solutions
Regularly perform risk management assessments and create disaster recovery plans
Implement resource monitoring, perform system and application audits, and provide regular status reports
Apply patches, upgrades and perform software and hardware installation and configuration
Design and implement backup solutions and administrate user and group permissions policies
Administrate Linux, MSSQL, MySQL, PostgreSql, Apache, OpenLDAP, OpenFiler, Eucalyptus, Windows Sever, IIS, and other server and application technologies
Maintain firewalls, switches, threat appliances, and the virtual networking environment
Manage databases, write and execute ETL procedures, perform regular backups, write queries and stored procedures in SQL, and make schema and data changes as directed
Research and report on new and emerging technologies
Other duties as assigned by the Software Development Manager
Minimum Qualifications
Five years experience in Linux systems administration
Three years experience administrating Apache, MySQL, MSSQL, IIS, and cloud virtualization platforms
Two years in Windows Server systems administration
Extensive experience compiling and installing software on Linux systems
Experience administrating users and maintaining Active Directory
Experience with clustering, load balancing, heartbeat, LinuxVM and other high-availability technologies
Experience with database replication and ETL procedures
Experience creating disaster recovery procedures and performing risk management assessments
Experience designing and implementing rigorous QA, integrity, error handling and testing procedures
High proficiency in shell scripting (BASH), VBScript, SQL, Perl, Python, and PHP scripting languages
Very strong knowledge of IP / networking fundamentals and database fundamentals
Must be willing to work alternate hours if needed
Must have strong oral and written communication skills
Must be energetic, well organized and patient with a blend of technical and analytical skills, initiative and independence including the ability to make judgment calls and to respond tactfully in all situations
Preferred Qualifications
Experience producing technical documentation and training users
Experience as a database developer or adminstrator
Experience utilizing Amazon EC2 services and building private clouds
